I wanna be a Ref!
I watched the Soccoroos Semi Final Asian Cup game against Japan on Saturday night. The first half was very close with possible goals going to either team. Personally I feel Japan had more opportunities; however it is Shots on Target that count and the Soccoroos certainly had their chances.
The first half ended 0-0 and when the second half started I knew it was only about time until either side went up on the board. It took World Cup hero John Aloisi to get us in the lead with 20 minutes to go after great positioning on the back post from a Harry Kewell corner.
However as it is with Soccer; Japan quickly equalised after very dodgy defence work in the Australian goal square. At this stage in the game the ref, although slightly biased towards Japan, thankfully hadn’t impacted the game much. 76 minutes in the game this all changed when once again the resulted was basically given to the opposition when Vince Grella was red carded for jumping in the air! Brings back memories to the Italian game.
Australia did well to hold off Japan for 44 minutes. Being one man down they were never going to score and had to rely on their luck in the Penalty Shootout. Unfortunately for Australia it wasn’t their day and to the credit of man of the match (in my eyes) Mark Schwarzer he wasn’t able to help the Australians through after penalty misses from Harry Kewell and Lucas Neill.
It was a good game with a very disappointing referee decision and unfortunate result.
