Subs too Good

Going for a Run

On what was a miserable wet weekend the Hawks’ number one side was up against the Subs at the late time of 8:30pm on a Melville Turf Saturday night. The Hawks had experienced good form in their previous two games leaving the team determined to make it three in a row and finally beat the unbeatable.

For once the team went into the game unchanged from the previous week. Everyone knew their role, everyone was ready to strike early. The team lined up in the middle of the field early; waiting for the opposition and the umpires. Once all were ready the coin (well it’s actually a stick) was tossed and Captain Lee Hansord picked the winner electing to start with the ball.

The Hawks started the game with force. The half backs (Carl Vanderputt, Kevin Pethick, and Steve Martino) controlled the ball well in the midfield. The Inners (Lee and Daniel Keane) used their positioning to help push the ball through to the forwards (Jonathon Lanzon, Guy Hoskin, and Nathan Messer) who were marked heavily. The Subs defence was strong and even after a number of short corners the Hawks were unable to convert.

The Hawks defence were under just as much pressure with Leighton Keane, Robert De Wind, and Goal Keeper Brett Chappells constantly under attack. After about 20 minutes into the first half the Subs drew the first blood with a reflection past Brett into the net. After the restart the Hawks tried to get back into the game however what seemed to be the Subs day turned into a nightmare for the Hawks as the Subs managed three more (lucky) goals before the end of the half.

The Hawks started the second half four goals down and set to put the Subs on to the back foot. However the subs had a plan of their own and no matter how much possession they had or didn’t have, when they entered the Hawks’ D, they were dangerous. By the end of the game the Subs had put another two goals into the net finalising the game at a 6-0 loss to the Hawks.

The Hawks have another hard game next week, lined up against top of the table team UWA at the Perth Hockey Stadium. The previous match-up saw the Hawks go down 2-4, obviously the team is sure the tables can be turned.
